Registration vs. Titling: What’s the Difference?
- Titling is the process of establishing legal ownership of the vehicle. It typically occurs during a change of ownership, whether new or used.
- Registration is what enables a vehicle to be legally driven on public roads. It assigns a license plate and ensures taxes and fees are paid to the appropriate agencies.
If a vehicle has already been titled (e.g., when a customer brings in their previously titled car for trade or purchase), it still needs to be registered – often with new fees, taxes, and potentially a new license plate.
Timing Is Everything: Why Monthly Fee Changes Matter
One of the biggest challenges in vehicle registration is that taxes and fees change every month, sometimes minutely, sometimes significantly. That makes calculating the exact amount owed at the time of sale a moving target.
If the registration isn’t processed in the same month as the sale, the amounts due could increase unexpectedly. This can result in a poor customer experience if you're forced to go back and request more money after the deal is "done."
